Summary
Hartley Teakle was a soil scientist whose expertise was in plant nutrition. For nearly 20 years he conducted soil surveys throughout Western Australia, particularly in the wheatbelts and other agricultural land. His focus was on salinity and the trace elements copper, manganese and zinc, as well as phosphate requirements of crops. His 1938 Presidential Address to the Royal Society of Western Australia on Western Australian soils and their properties served as the benchmark for all subsequent work. In 1947 he became Professor of Agriculture at the University of Queensland and continued to promote research into problems affecting the agricultural and pastoral industries. Teakle served as President of the Australian Society of Soil Science which, in 2010, inaugurated the L. J. H. Teakle Award. With R. A. Boyle he published Fertilizers for the Farm and Garden, 1958).
