Summary

Bob Endean was a pioneer in the study of venomous marine animals dangerous to man and an expert in the ecology of Queensland's coral reefs. His research focused on the venom apparatus, mode of delivery, pharmacological properties and biochemistry of toxins. The principal subjects of his investigations were Conus species, the Box Jellyfish, stonefish and scorpionfish. With Italian colleagues he studied bioactive secretions from skin of Australian amphibians, which led to the isolation of caerulein. Other research was into ciguatera and paralytic shellfish poisoning. Endean was particularly known for his public campaign highlighting the ecological danger to the Great Barrier Reef of the Crown of Thorns Starfish.
