Summary

Ludwig Bruck was a medical practitioner who came to Tasmania in 1873 and moved to Sydney in 1881. Here he established his own business as an importer of medical equipment and medical publisher. He was joined in partnership in 1914 by Richard Thomson. In 1915 Bruck was accused by the authorities of trading with the enemy and committed suicide. Thomson and the business survived with a change of name to Richard Thomson and Company. Aside from his writing as a medical journalist, Bruck was a highly successful medical publisher. For 15 years from 1881 he published the Australasian medical gazette for the local branches of the British Medical Association. Five editions of his The Australian medical directory and hand-book appeared between 1883 and 1900: the 1886 edition included, as an appendix, "The list of unregistered practitioners". Another of his books was the Guide to the health resorts in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand (1888).
