Summary
John Newton was a physicist recognised internationally for his work on nuclear structure and heavy-ion reactions. He was a pioneer in the study of high spin states using heavy-ion reactions. In his research he made pivotal advances in the study of Coulomb excitation, angular correlation methods, and the alpha decay of odd nuclei. Newton was a research scientist at the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell, United Kingdom, before joining the University of Manchester in 1959. He became Professor of Nuclear Physics at the Australian National University in 1970. During his 20 years at the University he was, instrumental in building up Australia's nuclear science capability. Under his leadership his department became a world-renowned facility in nuclear physics research.
