Summary

Augustus Morris tried to persuade Victorian stockowners in 1857 to raise a £100,000 prize to encourage the use of artificial cold to preserve fresh meat for transport to Europe. He remained a publicist for refrigeration, visiting England in 1867 to investigate competing methods and popularise the idea of frozen meat.
