Thomas McPherson founded Thomas McPherson & Sons, hardware merchants, in Melbourne in 1860. One of his sons, Hunter, established a Sydney branch in 1881.

Born Kingussie, Inverness, Scotland, 22 July 1822. Died Launceston, Tasmania, 27 December 1888. Arrived Melbourne 1852; started as iron and machinery merchant Collins Street West (later McPherson's Pty Ltd); alderman Bourke ward 1860s; mayor 1870-71.
