Summary

Frank Shaw was an organic chemist whose research focused on the chemistry of adrenaline and its significance in the control of blood pressure, and the role of calcium in smooth muscle contraction. In the 1940s he was contracted by the CSIR Division of Plant Industry to conduct a pharmacological survey of Queensland plants. The aim of the survey was to identify plants containing alkaloid-like compounds with a view to investigating their medical potential. In 1940 Shaw joined the Department of Physiology at the University of Melbourne as Lecturer in Pharmacology. He was the University's inaugural Professor of Pharmacology from 1954 to 1964.
