Summary
Ludwig Rummel was a chemist in Germany before coming to Australia in 1868. He found work in the phytochemical laboratory established in the Melbourne Botanic Gardens by Ferdinand Mueller. Rummel's work at the laboratory was mainly concerned with the extraction of tannin from plant materials other than wattle-bark, and the identification of alkaloids and other toxic substances isolated from Australian plants. Other work that he may have done while at the laboratory was a matter of contention between Rummel and Mueller. Rummel lost his job at the Gardens in 1873 when, in the administrative upheaval during which Mueller was removed from the position of Director of the Gardens, the laboratory and all its equipment were transferred to the Department of Agriculture. Thereafter Rumel was in business with Melbourne merchant Leopold Hesse in the manufacture of fertilizer, and developed his interest in microscopy and spectroscopy. He was also a music teacher.
