Summary
William Petterd published over 50 papers on geology and conchology. He was vice- president of the geology and mineralogy section of the Hobart meeting of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science in 1902. In 1875 he participated in the Chevert Expedition to Papua New Guinea, and continued to collect Coleoptera and Lepidoptera specimens after the conclusion of the Expedition. After his death, Petterd's minerals collection was placed in the hands of the Royal Society of Tasmania. Petterdite, an oxychloride of lead, was named in his honour.
