Summary
The Department of Medicine, Austin Health & Northern Health is part of the University of Melbourne's Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. It was formerly known as the Department of Medicine, Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre. The Department of Medicine has research laboratories located at three major hospitals in the north-east of Melbourne: the Austin Hospital and the Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital in Heidelberg, and the Northern Hospital in Epping. The scientists and physicians do clinical and basic research to understand basic biological mechanisms and disease-causing processes. Research in the Department spans diverse areas of biomedical research covering cancer, cardiovascular disease, endocrinology, genetics, neurosciences, and pharmacology.
