Summary
The Gordon Institute of TAFE, operates on six campuses. At the beginning of the 21st century the Institute taught around 17,500 students annually.
'The Gordon', as it is commonly known, was established in 1887. It has undergone many name changes since. It was Gordon Memorial Technical College 1885 - 1887; Gordon Technical College 1887 - 1921; Gordon Institute of Technology 1921 - 1976; Gordon Technical College from 1976 when the higher education courses became part of Deakin University; then Gordon Institute of TAFE from 1980.

From their Web site, July 2001: "Programs are offered through eight key teaching centres of: Textiles, Wool and Applied Science; Building and Construction; Business Services; Information technology and the Arts; Manufacturing; Literacy, Access, Community Services and Health; Tourism, Hospitality and Cookery and Corrections Education."
