Summary
From 1852 to 1860, the Geelong and Melbourne Railway Company was responsible for constructing and operating the train lines from Geelong to Melbourne - the first main country railway line in Australia. In 1856, due to the lack of private funding that curtailed construction of privately operated main lines, at a time when railways were needed to assist the gold mining industries in Ballarat and Bendigo, the Victorian colonial government took over the construction and operation of all trunk lines. The purchase of the Geelong to Melbourne line was finally settled in June 1860.
