The Department of Robotics and Digital technology was originally established in 1982 at the Chisholm Institute of Technology. In 1990 Chisholm merged with Monash University and the Department became part of Monash University's Faculty of Computing and Information technology. After the reduction in robotics work in the early 1990s the Department felt that a change of name was required and in 1996 it became the Department of Digital Systems.
