Abstract

The past few years have witnessed a remarkable growth of interest in all aspects of Australian history, at all levels of society. One manifestation of this has been a dramatic upsurge in the amount of serious scholarly attention being paid, both within the scientific community and beyond, to Australia's scientific past.

The Australian Academy of Science has taken a leading role in channelling this new enthusiasm into productive paths, both through the restructuring of its journal, Historical records of Australian science, and by its decision to celebrate Australia's forthcoming bicentennial by sponsoring a volume on the history of Australian science. The papers included in the present volume represent some early fruit from the Academy's bicentennial project, all six having been presented initially at a workshop organised by the steering committee for the project, held in Canberra on 24-25 August 1982. Their appearance as a collection at this stage is chiefly due to the enthusiasm and patient editorial work of D.H. Borchardt, to whom we are all therefore much indebted.
