Abstract

I wish to outline here a proposal to preserve a significant oral record of the scientific and technological communities in twentieth century Australia, and to argue that such a programme in the oral history of Australian science and technology be initiated as part of the contribution of the history of science to the Australian Bicentennial celebrations.
. . .
As such it is . a project which both celebrates the Australian past and looks forward on behalf of an Australian future. In order to perform such a celebration and fulfil the promise of such a vision in as representative manner as possible, however, the project must be commenced as soon as possible. For, with every new obituary of an Australian scientist or technologist, we must ask ourselves what we can do to preserve both the great moments and the ordinary but historically revealing moments in our national scientific and technological heritage, before they fade from memory. In the words of John Wheeler, notable modern physicist and one of the initiators of the Sources for History of Quantum Physics project, 'The bell has been tolling; time is short'.
