- Abstract
In this paper a review is made of the many articles which have been written describing the behaviour of steel structures when subjected to impulsive loads of high intensity. An outline is given of the three principal types of analysis which have been developed to cover such problems, namely the elastic approach, which ignores any departure from elastic behaviour, the elastic-plastic approach, in which it is assumed that the material undergoes
elastic deformation prior to flow at a constant limiting stress, and finally the rigid-plastic approach, in which it is assumed that the elastic deformations are so small as to be ignored.
The paper is accompanied by approximately 100 references, some of which refer to the more important work on concrete structures under impulsive loads, and to the properties of materials at high strain-rates.
