Abstract

This paper introduces a general new concept for design in which a desired behaviour is used to determine directly the required proportions of a structure. Its application to plates, shells and framed structures, of reinforced concrete prestressed concrete or metal, is outlined. The concept allows the required structure for optimum behaviour, in any given sense, or for maximum material economy, to be directly and simply obtained.
