Description

This series consists of specifications for inventions registered under the Patents system in Victoria between 1857 and 1904. Included in this series are reports made out by the examining engineers and other correspondence relating to payments and other matters.

On receipt of the application it was allocated a single number from the Applications for Patent Register held by National Archives as CRS A1160. This number was used for all subsequent actions.

The specification, or one copy of it, was examined by engineers while the application itself, often with another copy of the specification, was kept separate. The applications are held by National Archives as CRS A13149.

After investigation the engineers submitted a report in favour of or rejecting the specification. If the report was favourable fees were paid and the patent was granted. Patents were valid for fourteen years and payments were made at various times. The payment, or non-payment, of these fees are recorded in the Patents Register in CRS A1159. These registers contain much the same information as CRS A1160 but only for patents that were approved or continued with. The name of the series, therefore, is somewhat misleading and more information is actually held in A1160.

In 1903 the Commonwealth Patent legislation was passed and came into effect from 1 June 1904. This series was discontinued from this time though some paperwork was generated for some time.
