Description

This series consists of files from the second system used for the control of Patent registrations used in the Colony of Victoria between 1857 and 1904.

On receipt the application was given a number from the Applications for Patent Register. This number was used for all subsequent actions and was also used to control Patent Specifications and Provisional Applications and Specifications. This register is held by the National Archives as CRS A1160.

The applications consist of a written or printed page giving the name of the inventor and his pledge that he is in possession of an invention. The page is also signed and dated before a witness. As well as the application page there are copies, also handwritten or printed, of Provisional and Complete Specifications. These forms describe the invention and why it is unique. Drawings of the invention are also present.

After receipt of the application, duplicate copies of the Specifications were sent to another area of the patent office for investigation by engineers. These duplicate copies and reports are held by the National Archives as series A13150.

After investigation and payment of fees patents granted were valid for 14 years. Payments had to be made periodically and information about these payments is in the Patents Registers held as CRS A1159. The name of these registers is therefore slightly misleading and most, or at least duplicated, information is held in A1160.

In 1903 Commonwealth patent legislation was introduced and came into effect on 1 June 1904 and this series was discontinued though some work in progress was continued.
