Abstract

This report examines the role of CSIRO in polymer and plastics (P&P) research, and seeks to identify where Institute resources can best be directed to assist the short and longer term development of the local P&P industry. It links research opportunities to the output and needs of the local industry, and the possibilities afforded by new Institute arrangements.

All five Divisions have some current involvement in polymer and plastics notably the newly formed Chemicals and Polymers Division. Current activities include:

* Applied Physics (DAP) (polymer structure and properties)
* Biotechnology (DB) (biocompatible materials)
* Chemicals and Polymers, (DCP) (synthesis and properties of
specialty polymers including polymeric biomaterials, polymer
additives)
* Manufacturing Technology (DMT) (plastics processing)
* Materials Science and Technology (DMST) (structure / property relations in polymeric materials)

Other CSIRO Institutes have some overlapping research interests which are noted in the report.

The report essentially addresses three questions:

* should the Institute shift the emphasis of current P&P
research, for example towards greater attention on plastics
processing and fabrication?
* what should be priority research areas for CSIRO?
* how should CSIRO interact with industry in its P&P research?
