- Abstract
From the Introduction:
'The CSIRO Marine Laboratories were nearing their fiftieth annivarary when they began the great trek south from Cronulla, New South Wales, to Hobart, Tamania. David Tranter (who joined the division in 1955) was asked to ensure that archives reached Hobart safely. As official documents constituted most of the material, some of the "Cronulla Pioneers" were invited to supplement the archives with their reminiscences of the early days of the laboratories.
'From that begiining, the idea emerged of publishing an informal history of the laboratories, focusing on their origins and early days. Alan Pearce, who was independently working on the story of oceanography in Australia, gave enthusiastic support, contributing articles as well as compiling the chronology and list of vessels. Vivienne Mawson, the Scientific Editor of the Division of Fisheries and Oceanography, gathered more contributions, and coordinated, edited and published the book.
