Summary
Terry Piva is a biochemist whose current research focuses on cell signalling pathways, particularly how melanoma cells overcome BRAF inhibition. He also investigates the effect of natural products on augmenting therapeutic cell killing of cancer cells and the cytotoxic effect FLASH radiation on tumour cells. Other interests include amino acid and carbohydrate metabolism in a wide range of body tissues, cellular signalling pathways, and the effect of metal oxide nanoparticles on skin cell function. After holding research positions at the John Curtin School of Medical Research and QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, Piva became Lecturer in Biomedical Science at the Central Queensland University. In 2003 he moved to RMIT University where he is now Professor in the School of Health and biomedical Sciences. Piva is active in the Australian Society of Biochemical and Molecular Biology, holding several executive positions. For five years he was the Society's representative in the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB), of which he became Secretary General in 2024.
