Summary

Cecil Rix was interested in birds from childhood, and continued to observe them all his life. He joined the South Australian Ornithological Association in 1935, serving on Council in several capacities including President 1941 - 1942, and being a regular contributor to the South Australian ornithologist. A founding member of the Adelaide Ornithologists' Club in 1960, he also served here as council member, President and editor until 1980. From the mid-1940s, Rix was a strong advocate for establishment of national parks and reserves for the protection of wildlife. By the time of his retirement in 1972 as a Commissioner of the South Australian National Parks Commission, the state has 109 such reserves. In retirement he continued to observe birds and lobby for wildlife protection.
