Summary

Wilfrid Hughes was an ophthalmologist and surgeon who qualified in medicine in the United Kingdom and spent several years at the Central London Ophthalmic Hospital and other major hospitals in London. On returning to Melbourne he established a practice in Collins St, where he stayed for the rest of his life. For over 30 years he was Honorary Surgeon at the Melbourne Hospital, while also being a consultant at the Children's, St Vincent's and Queen Victoria Hospitals. Hughes specialised in diseases of the eye, ear and throat, and in paediatric orthopaedics. He was a founding member of the Ophthalmological Society of Melbourne, and President from 1906 to 1912.
