Summary
Hilary Booth was a mathematician and talented artist. At a young age she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Disease which continued to adversely affect her health. In 1992 she became Assistant Lecturer in Mathematics at the University of New England, later moving to the University of Adelaide and the Australian National University. For her doctoral thesis, awarded in 1999, she studied the theorem that a static Maxwell-Dirac system is electrically neutral. Her published research was in the area of mathematical physics/nonlinear partial differential equations, bioinformatics, and sequence analysis and gene regulatory networks. Booth was involved in both the Australian Mathematical Society and ANZIAM, serving as Assistant Editor for the latter's Journal. She was much respected for her teaching abilities. The Hilary Booth Scholarship is awarded annually by the Mathematical Sciences Institute at the Australian National University, to a student entering their final honours year or intending to proceed to an honours degree.
