Summary
Penny Gullan is an entomologist who has been Australia's scale insect specialist for almost 40 years (Coccoidea, Hemiptera). Her research focus is on taxonomy, but she also provided information and training to others interested in these insects. For over 20 years she taught at the Australian National University. Early in this period she became a Visiting Scientist at the Australian National Insect Collection. Between 2000 and 2010 Gullan taught at the University of California, Davis, California, where her research laboratory focused on the molecular and morphological phylogeny and systematics of mealybugs, felt scales, iceryines, lac insects and soft scale insects. With Pater Cranston, Gullan published the book The insects: an outline of entomology (1994), a highly successful text the 5th edition of which was issued in 2014. She has also published over 130 refereed papers on scale insects in Australia and elsewhere. Gullan has been a member of the Australian Entomological Society since 1976 and served as President 2012 - 2013. The Penny Gullan Award, presented in alternate years by the Australian Entomological Society, recognises excellence in scientific achievement in entomology by early career researchers. She is also commemorated in the genus Gullania (Monophlebidae: Hemiptera).
