Summary

Sir Sydney Schubert, BE BA DipT&T DipBAdm HonFIEAust FAIM, was the Coordinator General, Queensland from 1977 until he retired in 1988, and was Chief engineer, Coordinator General's Department from 1968 to 1977. Before that he was Assistant Commissioner, Department of Main Roads, Queensland, having commenced work in the department as a cadet civil engineer in 1945.

His distinguished contribution to engineering was acknowledged when he was appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1985, elected an Honorary Fellow (HonFIEAust) of the Institution of Engineers Australia in 1987, and was inducted into the Engineering Heritage Queensland Hall of Fame in 2009.

He was a founding director of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, and in 1999 was a founding director of the charity the Great Barrier Reef Foundation. In 2017, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority named a reef near Lizard Island as the 'Sir Sydney Schubert Reef' in recognition of his service.
