Aims of the Society include research, conservation and breeding of species and hybrids, and encouraging communication between experts and enthusiasts. The Society is organised with state and local branches, and holds regular shows and field excursions. Membership to ANOS is through subscription to the Society's journal, The orchadian (ISBN 0474-3342). With the first issue having been published in 1963, The orchadian includes articles on research and culture of orchids, information on the history and discovery of orchids, and reports of the Society's activities including awards given at shows.
