Summary
Ian Endersby was an entomologist whose research focussed on dragonflies (Odonata). He worked in particular on their identification and nomenclature. With Günther Theischinger, he published analyses of the research of Robin Tillyard. Other research was on the endangered Elthem Copper Butterfly. Endersby was involved in a wide range of natural history organisations and issues. He was instrumental in the creation of a reserve for the protection of the Caggage Tree Palm in Gippsland. For the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union (RAOU) he was one of the principal organisers of the Victorian Wetland Bird Survey, a citizen science project which ran between 1987 and 1992. Other groups in which he participated included the Edithvale Wetland Bird Survey, the Organ Pipes National Park Insect Survey, the RAOU Bird Atlas, the Galah and Lorikeet Surveys conducted by the Victorian Ornithological Research Group, and Fungimap. Endersby was a longterm member of the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria, his contributions to the Club including as Chairman of the Australian Natural History Medallion Committee. He was awarded the Medallion in 2002.
