Summary
Michael Burns was a thoracic surgeon who worked at the Royal Brompton hospital in the United Kingdom before coming to Australia. For many years he worked at St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney, becoming Head of his department. Between 1985 and 1987 he was President of the Thoracic Society of Australia, where he played a key role in the amalgamation of the Society with the Thoracic Society of New Zealand in 1988. In his later years Burns was honorary historian and archivist of the Society.
