Summary
Laura Downie is an ophthalmologist recognised internationally for her leadership in evidence-based vision care. In particular she is known for her work on the diagnosis of dry eye disease, a common condition which affects about 20 per cent of adults. Downie co-invented the Acoustically-Driven Microfluidic Extensional Rheometry (ADMiER) device which makes diagnosis accurate and straightforward. In 2022 Downie received the David and Valerie Award for her research. She is a Professor and Dame Kate Campbell Fellow for research excellence in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne.
