Summary
Richard Greenup was a medical practitioner involved in the treatment of asylum patients in Wiltshire, United Kingdom, before coming to New South Wales in 1850. In 1852 he was appointed as the second Medical Superintendent of the Lunatic and Invalid Establishment in Parramatta, one of the earliest such hospital in Australia. Here he introduced various reforms, promoting exercise for the patients and encouraging the men to engage in gardening and maintenance. He advocated changing the management of asylums to the system prevailing in the United Kingdom, of boards and official visitors. Greenup was also medical officer to a number of other organisations in Parramatta, including the gaol, the Protestant Orphan School, and the Parramatta Rifle Corps. In 1851 he was involved in the establishment of the University of Sydney, initially as Secretary and later as treasurer and registrar. Greenup died in 1866 from stab wounds inflicted by an inmate.
