Summary
The Astronomical Society of Victoria, which began in 1922, is one of the oldest and largest such societies in the southern hemisphere. Its objects include: to educate the public in the science of astronomy; to disseminate astronomical knowledge; to provide facilities and activities for persons interested in astronomy; and to associate with other organisations connected with astronomy. Membership is open to any interested person. Sections of the Society include astrophotography, radioastronomy, deep sky and history. A major project in which the Society is involved is the restoration of the Great Melbourne Telescope. Publications issued by the Society include: Journal of the Astronomical Society of Victoria (0044-9814), first published 1948 ; Astronomical yearbook (0067-0006) first published 1964; and Crux: newsletter of the Astronomical Society of Victoria (1329-475X) first published 1983 as ASV newsletter.
