In 1975 she and her colleagues identified the B19 virus, now known as the cause of Fifth Disease in children. Cossart returned to Australia in 1977 as Senior Lecturer in the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Sydney. She played a key role in developing an innovative program in teaching and research in virology. In 1986 she was appointed Bosch Professor of Infectious Diseases and Immunology, retiring in 2006.
