Summary
John Hooke was an engineer whose career at Amalgamated Wireless Australasia began in the early 1950s and ended with a 15-years term as Chairman from 1974 to 1988. Early in his career he screened first experimental television broadcast in Australia; later he was involved in the provision of the signal that relayed first moon landing. Hooke served on the boards of a number of prominent Australian technology companies, including Broken Hill Propriety Company Limited. He was also heavily involved in the University of Sydney, including as council member and Deputy President of the Science Foundation for Physics, and a foundation board member of the Brain and Mind Centre. In 2011 he gave to the University $5 million to establish both the University of Sydney Nano Institute and the John Hooke Chair in Nanoscience.
