Summary
The Gibbs Medal has been awarded by the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society since 2015. It recognises those who have made long-term contributions to operational forecasting services, and who have worked mostly in Australia. The focus is on "outstanding and consistent service to operational forecasting over many years, covering service provision, communication, improvements to services through engagement with working groups, and excellent provision of forecasts with a demonstrable beneficial community impact during a number of major weather events". [from https://www.amos.org.au/activities/awards/the-gibbs-medal/ 20/12/2022] It is now awarded in even-numbered years, alternating with the Christopher Taylor Award. William (Bill) Gibbs was one of Australia's foremost meteorologists and Director of the Commonwealth Bureau of Meteorology from 1962 to 1978.
