Summary
John Wilkins was a surgeon who established a practice in Williamstown, Melbourne, after arriving in June 1850. Between November 1852 and May 1854 he was appointed to several government offices, including those of Assistant Colonial Surgeon and Coroner for Williamstown. He resigned from these offices in 1865, returning to England for further study in diseases of the eye and throat. Wilkins was back in Melbourne in 1867 and in 1871 established his Self-Supporting Infirmary for the Throat, Chest, Eye and Ear. He was appointed honorary surgeon to the Alfred Hospital on its establishment, also in 1871, and published a number of papers in the Australian medical journal, but his relations with the Medical Society of Victoria were strained. Wilkins moved to New Zealand in 1877, settling in Auckland.
