Summary
MacIntosh Ellis was a forester who did his training in Canada. His early career was largely with the Canadian Pacific Railways and, during WWI, as Chief Forest Officer in the Canadian Forestry Corps in France. In 1920 he was appointed Director of Forests in New Zealand. His first task was the formulation of the Forest Act, generally considered a model of legislation relating to public forestry, and to organise his new department. He was an advocate for the establishment of Radiata pine plantations. Ellis moved to Australia in 1928 as Technical Director for Amalgamated Forests (Australasia Ltd) and Queensland Forests Ltd, and later as a consultant to afforestation companies. From 1936 he worked Australian Paper Manufacturers and was involved in the establishment of the Maryvale pulp mill. Ellis was interested in the development of tung oil plantations, as a better alternative for linseed oil.
