Summary
Brian Davies was appointed in 1964 to the Cato Chair of Psychiatry at the University of Melbourne, the first to hold that position. Having completed his medical degrees at Cardiff University, he spent a further eight years in psychiatric training in London before coming to Australia. In building his Department he concentrated on undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; state-of-the-art treatment and patient care; and facilitating wide-ranging, quality research. In his own research Davies concentrated on biological psychiatry, publishing world-leading research on tricyclic and monoamine oxidase inhibitor antidepressants. At the same time he supported psychotherapy research. Davies played a leading role in the establishment in 1978 of the Melbourne Clinic, Australia's largest private psychiatric hospital. After his retirement in 1990, he practiced here (and elsewhere) for a further 19 years. Davies published the classic text An introduction to clinical psychiatry (1971, 4th edition 1986).
