Summary
The Victorian Wader Study Group, which began in 1975 and was formally constituted in 1978, has as its primary objective to conduct long-term comprehensive studies of waders and terns throughout south-east Australia, particularly Victoria. This achieved through an extensive fieldwork program of capture and release of birds at key high tide roosts. Research aims include understanding migratory routes, stopover sites and destinations; the biometrics of species and subpopulations; and physiological changes during migration. Information gathered is used as a factual basis for conservation programs. A close association of over 30 years with the Australasian Wader Studies Group has resulted in a large database of shorebird biometrics, demographics and movement across the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. The VWSP bulletin: journal of the Victorian Wader Study Group has been published since 1980. In 2019 the Clive Minton Medallion was inaugurated, awarded to a member of the Group who has made an outstanding contribution to the objectives of the Group.
