Summary
Jon Stephenson was a geologist who participated in a number of exploratory expeditions, notable in Antarctica where he was the first Australian to reach the South Pole. He was involved in establishing the Department of Earth Sciences at James Cook University of North Queensland, being Associate Professor of Geology from 1970 to 1995. Stephenson led numerous research expeditions in north Queensland and the Pacific over a period of 34 years and was involved in committees related to the management of national parks in Queensland.
