Summary
The Australian Institute of Marine Science was established under the Australian Institute of Marine Science Act 1972 as a statutory authority of the Australian Government. It undertakes innovative and multidisciplinary scientific and technical research into Australia's tropical marine ecosystems and their biodiversity. Established in Townsville, Queensland, the Institute initially focused on the Great Barrier Reef, later extending its work to marine environments across northern Australia. A key role of the Institute is the provision of information to governments and industry to assist in monitoring and managing these environments. In addition to Townsville, the Institute has offices in Darwin (Northern Territory) and Perth (Western Australia).
