Summary
Established in 1788 the Surveyor General [I] (1788 - 1887) was responsible for the mapping and surveying of land in and around the new settlement of Botany Bay and later colony of New South Wales. In 1856 the Surveyor General's Department came under the ministerial control of the Department of Lands and Public Works (later Lands).
