Summary
Ross Large is a geologist recognised internationally for his research on the genesis of ore deposits and their relationships to evolution of life, mass extinction and mineral deposit cycles. With colleagues he demonstrated the close connection between selenium on the oceans and the succession of growth and extinction. In 1989 he established the ARC Centre of Excellence for Ore Deposit Research and Exploration Science (CODES), which became one of the world's most respected ore research centres and was notable for its close collaboration with the mining industry. For over 20 years Large was Professor of Economic Geology at the University of Tasmania.
