Summary

The Department of Public Health was established in 1904 and oversaw public health matters in the state of Tasmania. These matters included issues such as sanitation, factory work conditions, and food safety. The department was a significant broadening of the prior Central Board of Health (1886 - 1904) and from 1920 also oversaw psychiatric hospitals and services. In 1956 the Department of Public Health was replaced by the Department of Health Services (1956 - 1989).
