Summary
Richard Loyn is an ecologist with particular interest in forests, wetlands and fire ecology, and in working with community groups. In 1973 he established volunteer-based survey of waterbirds in Western Port, which is now Australia's longest-running survey of diverse waterbirds in complex ecosystems. In his work for several Victorian Government organisations he has been influential in policy-making for forest management, fire ecology and biodiversity conservation programs. Loyn devised a bird-counting methodology that is now widely use for population studies. He has published over 170 peer-reviewed publications.
