Summary
John Beaton was an archaeologist noted for his views on demographic, economic and social developments in indigenous communities during the Holocene and his willingness to engage in public discourse on these topics. His research included an examination of cycads in Aboriginal diet and littoral food sources, and was influential in developing the field of behavioural ecology in Australia. Between 1986 and 2001 Beaton was a faculty member of the University of California in Davis, U.S.A. From 2001 to 2018 he was Executive Director of the Australian Academy of Social Sciences.
