In 1954 the Mental Hospitals Department became the Western Australian Mental Health Services department. This shift likely reflects the move towards community based and patient treatment of mental health. In 1984 it merged with the Public Health Department of Western Australia (1911 - 1984) and the Department of Hospital and Allied Services (1981 - 1984) to form the Health Department of Western Australia (1984 - ).
