Summary
Dennis Shanks is a medical practitioner who specialised in infectious diseases, particularly diphtheria, meningococcal meningitis and malaria. As a member of the United States Army for over 20 years he conducted research and undertook field testing of drugs in Southeast Asia, South America and Africa. In 2006 he was appointed Director of the Australian Army Malaria Research Institute, Brisbane. He has published over 150 scientific papers as well as histories of influenza and malaria epidemics based on military records.
