Summary
Leonard Couchman was an electrical engineer by training and taught for many years in Tasmanian high schools, but is best know as an authority on Australian butterflies. For over 50 years he collected all over Australia ably assisted by his wife Ruth. The Couchman collection was significant for the number of types, its comprehensive coverage of Tasmanian butterflies, and the number of specimens from locations that have now disappeared under development. He donated the collection to the Australian National Insect Collection in 1990 together with extensive correspondence and notes.
